Even though also other types of fruits are cultivated, grapes are the outstanding product grown in the caldera of Fogo. Vines were brought to the island in 1870, and the villages of Chã das Caldeiras were founded in 1917 and 1920 for grape cultivation, due to the suitability of the caldera's climate and the fertile volcanic soils. Still, the wine is mainly consumed locally, with very limited export.
