The lower parts of Guatapé have been flooded due to filling of the hydropower reservoir of Peñol-Guatapé in the 1970s. However, the lake has also brought new economic opportunities, as it plays an important role for recreational activities and represents a popular leisure destination for the inhabitants of nearby Medellín.
