Quebrada Ishinca | Austrocylindropuntia floccosa

Plants need to develop specific strategies if they want to survive in the harsh climate at 5000 m asl. in the headwaters of the Ishinca Valley. This is even more critical for succulent plants such as this cactus, as they have to avoid freezing of the stored water. The hairs help to create a favourable microclimate reducing evapotranspiration and moderating the temperature, compared to the surroundings.
