Huaraz | Río Cojup and Río Quilcay

WI_pe048_201.jpg

Confluence of Río Cojup and Río Quilcay in the E suburbs of Huaraz. These rivers, draining the slopes and valleys of the glacierized Cordillera Blanca, represent important water sources for the capital city of Ancash. However, they are also considered hazardous due to the presence of glacial lakes in their headwaters. In 1941, an outburst flood from Lake Palcacocha rushed down the Cojup Valley and destroyed part of Huaraz, resulting in numerous fatalities.
