Azorella compacta, also known as llareta, is very well adapted to the harsh climate of the Altiplano, here at almost 5000 m asl. The plants form very hard and compact cushions, generating a favourable microclimate and enabling an efficient use of the sparse water supply by reducing evapotranspiration.
