Abra Patapampa | Azorella compacta and Volcán Sabancaya

WI_pe101_416_211.jpg

Azorella compacta, also known as llareta, is very well adapted to the harsh climate of the Altiplano, here at almost 5000 m asl. The plants form very hard and compact cushions, generating a favourable microclimate and enabling an efficient use of the sparse water supply by reducing evapotranspiration. The volcanic complex with the dormant Ampato (6288 m) and the active Sabancaya (5976 m) is shown in the background of the scene.
