Monts du Cantal

WI_fr041_901.jpg

Flight Vienna - Funchal, view in NW direction over the Monts du Cantal with Plomb du Cantal (1855 m) shown in the lower right centre of the photo. This mountain massif represents the remnant of Europe's largest stratovolcano, with its peak of activity approx. 8 million years ago. Volcanism in this area was related to the European Cenozoic Rift System. Later on, the volcano was deeply eroded by fluvial processes, but also by Pleistocene glaciers, as indicated by some U-shaped valleys.
