View along the E coast of the peninsula of Istria in SW direction. The town of Opatija (formerly Abbazia) has a long tradition as a holiday resort, rooting in the period of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. The coastal area, sheltered by the Učka mountains and therefore characterized by a mild climate, was known as the Austrian Riviera at that time.
