Flight Praia - Lisboa, view in SE direction. Gran Canaria basically represents an extinct shield volcano. Remnants of the volcanic slopes can still be recognized. However, they have been deeply dissected by fluvial erosion. Higher parts of the NE slopes are more humid than the rest of the island, supporting the existence of montane forests.
