In dry places such as the beach of El Médano, the accumulation of sand and vegetation growth are connected through a positive feedback: vegetation traps sand, and sandy deposits can store water. The result is a nabkha: a large sandy mound covered by dense vegetation. Pico del Teide (3715 m) is shown in the background of the photo.
