The Hohlfelsen is one of the most prominent outcrops of eclogite in Austria. This hard and heavy metamorphic rock, consisting of the minerals garnet and omphacite, has formed through the metamorphosis of gabbro under very high pressure. It was uplifted during the formation of the Alps and now stands out from the softer surrounding rocks.
