An initially submarine volcanic eruption created the Capelinhos peninsula at the very W end of Faial in 1957 and 1958. Since then, part of the new land has been eroded by the forces of the sea. The Ponta dos Capelinhos lighthouse on the left side of the image was abandoned due to the eruption, but has later evolved into a major tourist attraction.
