This photo shows part of the cliff which formed the W end of Faial until the appearance of the Capelinhos peninsula. The nearby eruption of the submarine Capelinhos volcano has also strongly overprinted the older land surfaces near the cliff. They are colonized by the ice plant (Carpobrotus edulis), introduced from South Africa.
