View from the summit of Cabeço do Canto (347 m) in W direction to the Capelinhos peninsula. It formed in 1957 and 1958 through the eruption of the submarine Capelinhos volcano, extending the land area of Faial towards W. The eruption resulted in major damage to buildings, agricultural fields, and infrastructure. A small emigration wave to North America was the consequence. 65 years later, part of the newly formed land has been eroded by the sea, and the site has become a major tourist attraction.
