View from the rim of the Caldeira volcano along a tectonic fissure indicated by a chain of cones, the youngest volcanic features of the island, in W direction. Cabeço do Fogo (572 m) in the foreground formed during a devastating eruption in 1671 and 1672. The Capelo peninsula is shown behind. The older Cabeço Verde (488 m) and Cabeço do Canto (347 m) are overgrown with laurel forest, but the Capelinhos volcano at the W tip of the island only appeared during an eruption in 1957 and 1958.
