Panoramic view in N direction over the pit crater (Pico Alto) and the spatter cone (Piquinho) at the summit of Montanha do Pico. With an elevation of 2351 m, this dormant stratovolcano forms the highest mountain of Portugal. It is the only peak of the Azores reaching above the planetary boundary layer, so that the climate is much less humid than below. The summit is a popular destination for mountain hikers. Historic eruptions from the flanks occurred in the 16th and 18th century.
