Morning panorama from the Miradouro da Boca do Inferno across the caldera of Sete Cidades in NW direction. This volcanic landscape in the NW part of São Miguel has formed through a long and complex history of mainly explosive eruptions, leaving behind an assemblage of craters and lakes enclosed in one roundish caldera of 5 km diameter. Lakes are from left to right: Lagoa Rasa, Lagoa de Santiago, and Lagoa Azul. The village of Sete Cidades is shown in the background.
