The luxurious Monte Palace Hotel opened in 1989 at the caldera rim. However, due to the lack of sufficient target audience, its remote location, and frequent cloudiness obstructing the views, it had to close 18 months later. Since then, it has fallen into disrepair and suffered from looting. It now represents a classic example of a lost place.
