View from Diedamskopf to Kanisfluh (2044 m), Hirschberg (1834 m), Winterstaude (1877 m) and, in the right background, the Nagelfluh mountain chain. Kanisfluh is composed of Jurassic limestone, and Hirschberg and Winterstaude of Cretaceous limestone. All these rocks originate from the N shelf of the Tethys ocean. This so-called Helvetic system is common in Switzerland, but only found in the very W part of Austria. The Nagelfluh chain consists of folded and tilted molasse sediments.
