Sunrise view from the summit area of Kanisfluh in SW direction to Hoher Freschen (2004 m), built of relatively dark and erodible marl, and across the Austrian-Swiss border to Säntis (2502 m), partly composed of bright, massive limestone. Both types of rock formed in the Cretaceous at the N shelf of the Tethys ocean. This so-called Helvetic system is common in Switzerland, but only exposed in the very W part of Austria. Also, note the shadow of Kanisfluh cast over the foreground of this scene.
