View from Schwägalp to the sequence of hard limestone and softer, more densely vegetated marl layers of Säntis (2502 m). All these rocks formed in the Cretaceous at the N shelf of the Tethys ocean. This so-called Helvetic system is commonly exposed in Switzerland.
