View from the Mirador de Kari over the Cordillera de la Sal in SE direction. This very young range of hills consists of a sequence of soft clastic and evaporitic sedimentary layers, which evolved in and around an ancient salt flat, and of some pyroclastic deposits. The entire package has been tilted and folded due to tectonic compression, and eroded by runoff due to heavy rainfall. The oasis of San Pedro de Atacama and the main range of the Andes are shown in the background.
