The giant Wildalpen rock avalanche, involving approx. 900 million cubic metres of limestone, occurred approx. 5900-5700 years ago in the N part of the Hochschwab massif. Since then, the slip surface of the initial rock slide has been influenced by karst processes, resulting in the formation of very straight karren features.
