This citadel was established as a Habsburg star fort from 1693 to 1735, after the defeat of the Ottoman attacks. It lost importance in the late 19th century, and parts of the fortifications were removed in the 1920s to facilitate the urban development of Osijek. The core, however, remains a fine ensemble of Baroque architecture, despite some notable damage during the Croatian War of Independence.
