Landmannalaugar is located at the N side of Torfajökull, a major scene of acidic volcanism. Most activity took place during the Pleistocene, but geothermal phenomena such as fumaroles do occur. Laugahraun, a 15th century lava field, appears in the background. It consists of obsidian, a volcanic glass of acidic material, despite its dark colour.
