Landmannalaugar | Laugahraun and rhyolite mountains

WI_is055_510.jpg

View from the slopes of Brennisteinsalda in SE direction. Landmannalaugar is located at the N side of Torfajökull, a major scene of acidic volcanism during the Pleistocene. The bright rhyolitic rocks, together with bluish-greenish and darker rocks, vegetation, and snow, lends a colourful appearance to this area. The dark rocks in the foreground are the upper part of Laugahraun, a 15th century lava field. They consist of obsidian, a volcanic glass made of acidic rock, despite its dark colour.
