Landmannalaugar | Rhyolite mountains

WI_is055_511.jpg

View from the slopes of Brennisteinsalda in SE direction. Landmannalaugar is located at the N side of Torfajökull, a major scene of acidic volcanism during the Pleistocene. The bright rhyolitic rocks, together with bluish-greenish and darker rocks, vegetation, and snow, lends a colourful appearance to this area, and makes it popular among tourists. The dark rocks at the bottom are the upper part of Laugahraun, a 15th century lava field.
