Jökulsá á Fjöllum, the second longest river in Iceland, transports water from the ice cap Vatnajökull to the N coast. Dettifoss is one of numerous waterfalls along the way. It is said to be the most powerful in Iceland, in terms of combination of discharge and fall height, second in Europe only to the Rhine Falls in Schaffhausen (Switzerland).
