The Jökulsá á Fjöllum, second longest river in Iceland, transports water from Vatnajökull to the N coast. It has been an obstacle for traffic for centuries. This photo shows the bridge of the Ring Road near Grímsstaðir. It was completed in 1947, replacing the ferry service run by a farmer, and represents one of only three bridges crossing the river.
