The Mid Atlantic Ridge runs through the area around Mývatn, not only leading to frequent volcanic activity, but also to post-volcanic phenomena such as fumaroles, hot springs, and - as shown in the foreground of this scene, in the geothermal field of Hverir - mud pots.
