WI_is165_361.jpg

View from Leirhnjúkur over the S part of the Krafla caldera. Located along the Mid Atlantic Ridge, this depression has a diameter of approx. 10 km. The lava field in the right portion of this image goes back to the most recent eruptive phase, the "Krafla fires" in 1975-1984. Hlíðarfjall (771 m) can be seen in the right background.
