View from Leirhnjúkur over the SW part of the Krafla caldera. Located along the Mid Atlantic Ridge, this depression, only barely recognizable in the landscape, has a diameter of approx. 10 km. The lava field crossing the centre of this photo goes back to the most recent eruptive phase, the "Krafla fires" in 1975-1984.
