Krafla | Thufa

WI_is165_363.jpg

The hummocks dominating the the foreground of this scene in the Krafla caldera are thufa. Consisting of peat, they form in periglacial wetlands, but not necessarily in areas influenced by permafrost. The term is taken from the Icelandic language (singular: Þúfur).
