Located along the Mid Atlantic Ridge, the Krafla caldera has a diameter of approx. 10 km. This scene shows the view from Leirhnjúkur over the N part of the caldera, shaped by the "Krafla fires" in 1975-1984. This volcanic cone and extensive, still degassing lava fields give evidence of this most recent eruptive phase.
