Siglufjörður, the N-most town of Iceland, used to be an important centre of herring fisheries and industry. The decline of these businesses, starting in the 1960s, resulted in a decline in population. Later, there have been intitiatives to revive this remote place and to promote tourism, such as the Herring Era Museum shown in this scene. It opened in 1994, using the building of an old salting station which had closed in 1969.
