Landmannalaugar is located at the N side of Torfajökull, a major scene of acidic volcanism. Most activity took place during the Pleistocene, but geothermal phenomena such as fumaroles do occur. Bright rhyolitic rocks lend a colourful appearance to the mountain Brennisteinsalda (855 m), the name of which means "sulphur wave".
