The Dalmatian town of Kotor was influenced by various cultures over the centuries and formed a province of the Venetian Republic from 1420 to 1797. This period is clearly reflected in the architecture of the well-preserved historic centre. The Kotor Cathedral goes back to the 12th century, but had to be rebuilt after an earthquake in 1667.
