This lava dome (1465 m) formed approx. 10700 years ago due to an eruption of Peléan type. It represents the highest summit of the Chaîne des Puys, an assemblage of volcanic cones, lava domes, and maars associated to the European Cenozoic Rift System. The entire area has been declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2018.
