Street scene in Le Panier. This oldest part of Marseille looks back to a changeful history closely related to the nearby harbours. The neighbourhood experienced a decline during much of the 20th century. Gentrification started in the 1980s. Only since the turn of the 21st century, Le Panier has developed into a touristic spot. Also the street art, lending a colourful appearance to the narrow alleys, is a rather new phenomenon.
