Le Panier, oldest part of Marseille, looks back to a changeful history closely related to the nearby harbours. The neighbourhood experienced a decline during much of the 20th century. Gentrification started in the 1980s. Only since the turn of the 21st century, Le Panier has developed into a colourful and touristic spot.
