Hundreds of thousands of such concrete bunkers were built throughout the country during the rule of Enver Hoxha, mostly from the 1960s to the 1980s. They were intended to allow a people's army defend the country in case of foreign invasions. They were never used in such way and became derelict, but some are employed for other purposes.
