The small peninsula between the Vivari Channel and the Butrint Lagoon looks back to a changeful history. It was used for a Greek settlement, a Roman town, and a Byzantine bishopric before it fell into decline and was abandoned in medieval times. The peninsula has evolved into an important archaeological site since the 1920s and has been declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1992. This photo shows a bust in the Venetian Fortress. The island of Corfu (Greece) is shown in the background.
