The historic centre of Gjirokastër represents a fine ensemble of Balkan architecture, going back to the Ottoman era. Stones from the nearby mountains played an important role as building material, also for covering roofs. Declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2005, the old town has evolved into a very touristy place.
