Manganui Gorge drains the E slopes of the dormant stratovolcano Taranaki Maunga (2518 m, shown in the background). Since 2024, the gorge has been crossed by the Manganui Gorge Suspension Bridge, a footbridge for touristic use. Taranaki Maunga has a strong meaning to Māori. In 2025, the mountain was recognized as a legal person. The former name Mt. Egmont was discarded as an official name.
