This building serves as a temporary replacement for the Anglican ChristChurch Cathedral, severely damaged in the earthquakes of 2010 and 2011 and still awaiting repair by February 2026. The Transitional Cathedral is better known as the Cardboard Cathedral, as cardboard was used as building material, besides wood and glass.
