This surface rupture of the Leader Fault, known as the Waiau Wall, impounds a small lake. It appeared during the Kaikōura Earthquake of 14 September 2016 and is one of few remaining faults clearly visible a the surface. Most others have been blurred through erosion processes or human interventions.
