This surface rupture of the Leader Fault, known as the Waiau Wall, impounds a small lake. It appeared during the Kaikōura Earthquake of 14 September 2016 and is one of few remaining faults clearly visible a the surface. Most others have been blurred through erosion processes or human interventions. The scarp of the Leader landslide, related to the same fault, appears in the background of the scene.
