The tilted and folded sandstone rocks of the Dolomiti Lucane sharply rise from the surrounding hills. Despite the rugged terrain, this area at an elevation of more than 1000 m has been populated for more than a millennium. The village of Pietrapertosa, which appears in the right central background of this photo, is often considered one of the most beautiful villages in Italy.
