View from the road to Pietrapertosa. The tilted and folded sandstone rocks of the Dolomiti Lucane sharply rise from the surrounding hills. Castelmezzano goes back to the 10th Century when people fled to the rugged terrain from Saracene invaders and founded the village at 750 m asl. It is considered one of the most beautiful villages in Italy.
