The world's largest art museum is accommodated in the Louvre Palace, which had its origin in a medieval castle. In 1682, Versailles became the new Royal Palace and the career of the building as a museum began, first housing the Royal collection. The Louvre was opened to the public in 1793 as a consequence of the French Revolution. The Pyramide du Louvre was added in 1989.
